The Loneliness Epidemic

As we are all urged to stay home and maintain social distance to slow Covid-19, loneliness is most likely spreading like wildfire.  The effects of loneliness on mortality are similar to serious risk factors like Obesity.  Not only that, the impact of loneliness on ones health is often compared to the damage of smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Regardless, we know loneliness is detrimental to our mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

In this “modified” way of living during the stay at home orders, virtual meet ups are the new road to connect (for now).  While these meetings offer much relief and true connection for many people, they don’t work for everyone.  In fact, many people report that these meet ups can leave them feeling less connected, and even more frustrated and alone.  If another Zoom meeting isn’t going to work, how do we combat loneliness and stay healthy…while staying apart?

1.    Admit to yourself that you are in fact lonely-  It’s never suggested to run your loneliness thoughts on replay, but acknowledging that you feel isolated or lonely is the first step to take hold of the situation.  Take the information of loneliness as a sign that something needs to change up in your life routine, today.

2.    Focus on the support of just a few friends or family members-  Be the one to reach out to the people in your life that you have that you want to connect with.  Share your feelings, and make plans for good times to connect on a consistent basis (regardless if its daily, weekly, or monthly based on what’s needed to feel connected)

3.    Journal-  Thoughts to paper are great for clearing the mind, and unloading other taxing thoughts that may be ongoing.   Journaling can also more directly point out triggers that can be progressing the loneliness.

4.    Take a break from social media-  It’s known that not all stories posted to social media are accurate portrayals of reality.

5.    Keep a schedule- Having a consistent schedule gives purpose, and it creates a sense of security by knowing what’s happening throughout the day.  The daily schedule should include health self-care items as well!  Nobody can feel their best if they are not taking good care of themselves.

  • Time outside in the sunshine

  • Detox bath with Epsom Salts

  • Create healthy meals

  • Adequate sleep

6.    Expect the best - Truly believe that the loneliness is a temporary situation, you will get through this…believe that.

I would love to hear from you, reach out and let me know how you are doing!  I miss you all, and can’t wait to see everyone again very soon!
